Summary
One or two days pass since Lanny’s disappearance, and public interest in the case begins to grow. Pete is still the main suspect, and the police hold him for questioning. The police search his house and find his art strange. They do not know about his renowned art career. They find a piece of paper with Lanny’s name repeatedly doodled on it, and they also find a drawing of Pete’s depicting sex between two indistinct people. Pete maintains his innocence, saying he would never harm Lanny and that he does not know where Lanny is. As time goes on, the neighbors develop many theories about Lanny’s disappearance. Several theories involve kidnapping. Robert tries to help the search parties, but they simply send him home and tell him to rest. The story gains more publicity and even becomes national news.
