Langston Hughes
The subject of this biography, Hughes was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. He was born into poverty, fatherless, and with little hope of becoming anything. However, Langston was a persistent individual and a hard worker who felt the urge to create. He used his experiences as a black man living in America, and his experiences as a black man traveling the world to enrich his soul and writing. Much of his writing was heavily influenced by Jazz and Blues music, and he is referred to as "The Blues Poet." Langston was an important, if not the most important, member of the Black Renaissance, which brought culture back to the black community.
