Summary

Chapter 1 is titled “A Small Town Under the Stars.” The opening scene takes place on the screen at a drive-in movie theater sometime in the mid-1900s. In the scene, two young lovers were in a car with an alien being watching as they made out. The alien “observes the two hairy snacks writhing in their metal box” (Location 35). He did not know what they were doing as he moved ever closer to the car. In the drive-in parking lot, many teenagers watched, horrified at the scene in the movie. The chapter ends with the statement that the real invasion, which came later, “looked nothing like that” (Location 38).
