China

The main setting of all of the short stories is mainland China and the inter-generational families that migrate within and outside of the country. The characters are proud of their Chinese heritage which is shown in their food, style of dress, and language.

United States

Many of the characters also have an investment in the United States whether through their own migration or the migration of a family member. They come to the U.S. for enhanced opportunities or to escape their lives in China.

City

The city is as much a character in the novel as anyone because the characters tie much of their identity to the opportunities they gain from living in the city. Bayi, for example, truly escapes from Keju by moving to the city and accepting the hardships of her new life.
