Summary
In Part II, "June 1966," Maddie visits Cleo's parents. Mrs. Sherwood corrects Maddie; Cleo's given name was Eunetta. Though she is forthcoming, Mr. Sherwood is not. Cleo's boys play in the corner. Mrs. Sherwood explains Cleo's roommate, Latetia eloped the month before Cleo's disappearance. Maddie dismisses this, asking instead to see Cleo's fur. Mrs. Sherwood shows her Cleo's wardrobe; the clothes are all wrapped in plastic. When Maddie asks more questions, Mrs. Sherwood begins crying. One of the boys throws a truck at Maddie, so she takes the hint and leaves. She believes Cleo's clothes were gifts from a lover.
In "Little Man," Cleo's son, Lionel, narrates Maddie's visit. He does not like that she made his grandmother cry. He misses his mother, describing their closeness. He realizes she will never return, blaming himself.
