Summary
In Part I, "The Patrolman," a cop and his partner, Paul, get a call about a body. They meet Maddie and Judith near Cylburn Avenue where they claim to have found the body. The cop notes Maddie's beauty. When they reach the fence, they cannot find the body in the dark. The cops think they made a mistake. Walking further, they eventually relocate Tessie's twisted frame. Reporters arrive, including Jack Diller, from the Star. The men warn Maddie about being involved in the story. Afterwards, the cops drive them home. Leaving, the narrating cop sees Ferdie near Maddie's apartment.
In "March 1966," the newspapers fail to give Maddie credit for finding Tessie. Later, Ferdie tells her she and Judith are considered "persons of interest" (76). Maddie remembers the cops asking if she knew Tessie; their families had known each other. Later, Maddie meets...
