Summary

In Chapter 18, All the Night-Tide, Emma wakes while Julian is carrying her up the beach. Julian performs a rune and she coughs up the ocean water. Julian is furious, describing how he'd coughed up salt water when she was drowning. Julian says Emma does not understand how they are connected, and that he will die if she does. She cannot say who leaned first, but soon they are kissing passionately. They have sex and fall asleep in each other's arms. The next morning, they discover footprints in the sand, indicating someone watched them sleeping. Julian tries to salvage the situation, saying the law does not forbid them having sex, but that they have to end this romantic relationship before they fall in love. They each struggle with their emotions and Emma ends up saying they should forget it happened.
