Chapter 28-29 Summary

Cole arrives at McConnell's sod farm and McConnell explains that Wozniak had been under suspicion of involvement with the Chihuahua brothers, members of a burglary ring. Krantz also believes that Pike was involved. McConnell admits that Pike's story of Wozniak's death is fishy, but he also believes in Pike's character, and that Pike would never steal or murder a man in cold blood. Cole realizes that one of Wozniak's informants might be able to tell him more about what happened on the day of Wozniak's death.

Cole visits Paulette Renfro, Wozniak's widow. Paulette speaks warmly about Pike, but becomes uncomfortable and nervous when Cole asks about Wozniak's informants. Wozniak's daughter, Evelyn, mentions that her father's belongings are in a storage unit, and offers to help Cole get into it if he promises to tell her the truth about her father's death...
