Chapter 21-23 Summary

Pike wakes up from a dream and cannot return to sleep. He goes running and meets a young runaway named Trudy. At the same time as Joe's run, Dersh's next-door neighbor spots a man who looks just like Joe Pike walk into Dersh's house and shoot the man dead.

Early the next morning, two Robbery-Homicide detectives wake up Cole and tell him that they have arrested Joe Pike for the murder of Eugene Dersh. Cole races downtown after reassuring Lucy that Pike would not have done such a thing. Unfortunately, Dersh's neighbor picks Pike out of the lineup, and the police book him for murder.

Pike meets with his lawyer and explains his alibi, that he was running far away from Dersh's house at the time of the murder. Cole resolves to find the runaway, Trudy, but Krantz is equally resolved...
