Summary

In "January," Keila and Oscar Alvarado were babysitting their twin granddaughters, Diana and Andrea. Suddenly the girls disappeared. Keila moved through the house looking for them. She had three daughters, Claudia, Olivia, and Patricia, all of whom still had belongings at the house. Outside, Keila realized that the twins had fallen into the pool. Olivia and Felix came home in time to help get them out. "Felix dialed 911 on his cellphone" (5). After the paramedics arrived, they raced the twins to the hospital. In the waiting room, Olivia yelled at her mother for being irresponsible.

Over the past few months, Oscar had been doing nothing but watching the Weather Channel. The morning after the pool incident, he realized his family was gone.
