Stanford University
Stanford University is a private university in Stanford, California, less than ten minutes from Chanel Miller's parents' house in Palo Alto. Because of its close proximity, Miller had been visited the university numerous times throughout her life, taking classes, and attending sporting events and other recreational activities. Her assault happened behind a fraternity house on campus where she was attending a party on January 17, 2015, perpetrated by a member of the swim team. Miller feels that it is unfortunate her assault occurred on a college campus, because it serves to minimize the seriousness of the crime. In college, she explains, "situations are softened, stripped of severity and any kind of seriousness, any real punishment. People read this story, heard 'frat, athlete, hookup, enjoy.' That word bank was all they needed for the whole scene to come to life" (51).
