I was used to seeing Papá and Mamá try and poke each other's eyes out, but I had never seen Mamá rolling in a ditch with another woman. They looked like pigs waddling in the mud--hungry and thirsty for war.

Importance: This quote offers the reader one of the first examples of the animalistic imagery that Knitting the Fog uses to portray family life in Mayuelas. Here, the idea of Mamá and Eufemia fighting is likened to "pigs waddling in the mud--hungry and thirsty for war." Through this image, the author highlights the violence of life in Mayuelas. However, while Claudia observes the exceptionality of this moment (the first time she has seen Mamá fight with another woman), Claudia's first observation (that Mamá and Papá often fight) reminds the reader of a sad truth: how normal violence is in Claudia's community, especially at home.
