Harry Hole
Harry Hole is the main character and the tragic hero of the novel. He is undone by his alcoholism after Rakel orders him out of her house. His drinking leaves him vulnerable to an elaborate set up in which Bjørn frames Harry for the murder of Rakel. Bjørn drugs Harry with Rohypnol and leaves him at Rakel’s house, where Bjørn earlier murdered Rakel. Harry has visions of being in the house after Rakel was murdered. He imagines Rakel’s dead face though he never looked at her face at the crime scene. He has visions of looking at the chandelier in Rakel’s house from the vantage of laying on the floor, the place where he woke from the drugs that Bjørn gave him and discovered himself next to Rakel.
