Chapter 42-43 Summary
Cross returns to the South. He thinks this may be an impossible case to solve. The FBI and local police are doing everything they can. Eleven suspects are under surveillance, ranging from professors to doctors and even a retired cop. Because of the "perfect" crime aspect of the case, all area policemen were checked by the FBI. Cross was not concerned with these suspects—he is there to look where others are not looking. Cross looks into all open serial murder cases across the country. The Gentleman Caller case attracts his attention and he reads the Caller's newspaper/diary entries. The Caller, in his next to last entry, talks about a woman being held captive in California: Naomi C., second year law student, black, very attractive, twenty-two years old.
