Summary
In Chapter 21, Isabelle met with Beauvoir and Gamache at the cafe to tell them that she had discovered Benedict had moved to a smaller ground floor apartment and was caretaker of his building. He had once had a live-in girlfriend, but they had recently broken up.
Beauvoir pointed out that if Benedict had intentionally made Bertha’s house collapse, he had obviously made a mistake because he got trapped inside. Isabelle noticed the way that Beauvoir snapped at Gamache when he indicated that was probably the case. After Gamache left Isabelle and Beauvoir alone, Isabelle asked Beauvoir why he was mad at Gamache. Beauvoir told her about the encounter with Cournoyer in the bathroom. Isabelle suggested that Cournoyer was just messing with him, but Beauvoir still believed that Gamache knew more than what he was saying.
