Summary
In "May 29th—The Battlefield," Isadore is with Frank Bailey at Frank’s house that he shares with his wife Virginia. Isadore is reading a series of articles in the newspaper about black men killed by white men because they were suspected of being the highwayman. It becomes clear that Frank Bailey, an 18-year old, is the highwayman, and that Isadore has been helping him. The newspapers reveal that the man Bill killed was actually a security guard. Frank is unbothered by the newspaper articles, and Isadore regrets his decision to go along with Frank’s robbing and tries to think of a way to untangle himself. The robbing has kept Isadore from practicing music and the positive effects that practice brings to his mind and life.
