Summary

Nina and Adrik ride to bury Matthias’ body. They talk about their time under Zoya’s leadership and it is revealed that Nina and the other students were once held hostage by the Darkling. Nina is also the only known Grisha to survive a large amount of parem. Matthias’ voice tells her to live proudly, but Nina is terrified of burying him. She tells Adrik that she thinks Matthias was shot during the battle at the Ice Court but she could not save him. As they leave camp, she thinks of her time in an orphanage where she met her first bully named Tamek. When he tried to harass Nina, she accidentally made him sick.
