Summary

The novel begins with Dana’s first person narration informing the reader that Dana lost an arm on her “last trip home” (7). This indicates the beginning of Dana’s story. The first setting was Dana’s apartment in June of 1976, a few days before her 26th birthday. Dana and her husband, Kevin, had decided to spend the day at home, relaxing. Dana and Kevin started discussing their jobs as writers when Dana started to feel a strange sensation in her body. She had vanished, and found herself on a riverbed, watching a boy named Rufus drown. Dana dove in to save him, and when she succeeded, the child’s mother accused her of killing Rufus.
