Summary

In Chapter 8, narrated by Sam, Sam remembers how he had wanted to hurt Gwen when he first met her because of what had been done to his sister. He thought she was partially responsible. As he got to know her he began to like her, and then to need to be around her. He was upset by the way Melvin had thrown her off balance with his call but sensed that it meant they were getting close to Melvin.

Sam makes himself watch the torture video to glean any details that he can. He first realizes it is not just torture but an interrogation. The man being tortured says he was sent a man named Rivard. Sam calls Mike and they figure the man is Ballantine Rivard, a billionaire who owns Rivard Luxe. Sam decides that he and Gwen are going to talk...
