Summary

In Chapter 4, narrated by Gwen, Gwen and Sam drive to the Markerville, leaving their vehicle and approaching the abandoned town on foot when they get close. Among the decaying buildings, they find a car hidden. Gwen pulls the door handle, making the alarm go off, a noise that makes Arden come out to check her car. Arden is clearly scared when Gwen calls her name. Arden asks if “they” (46) sent them. Gwen encourages Arden to take them to a place where she is comfortable so they can talk.

Inside the old post office/general store, Gwen and Sam are astonished by Arden’s paintings of the old town. Gwen starts the conversation by telling Arden that Absalom has been after her as well. She lets Arden know that she wants to find a way to stop what Absalom is doing. Arden suggests staying...
