Summary
This section concerns pages 404-508 of the novel. The artist continues to meet with Mariye to paint her portrait, and Menshiki once again arrives, this time to take Shoko and Mariye to his house, as he had promised. When they have left, the Commendatore appears again, telling the narrator that they will be gone all day, and that Menshiki has an ulterior motive for inviting them to his house. He also confirms that he has not been the one ringing the bell at the shrine. Menshiki, Shoko, and Mariye do indeed return to the artist's house late at night, suggesting that the Commendatore can predict the future. The artist wakes in the night after hearing a sound.
