Summary
The section concerns pages 120-192 of the novel. The artist awakes in the middle of the night, aware that he can hear a bell ringing outside. He goes to investigate, and finds that the sound is coming from behind a shrine in Tomohiko's garden; behind the shrine is a pile of boulders, too big to move, and the ringing is coming from below them. Unable to move the boulders, he goes back to bed and tries to ignore the ringing
When the artist sees Menshiki again he mentions the ringing, and Menshiki, deeply intrigued, asks if he can come at midnight. The artist agrees, and, later, Menshiki arrives and the two drink whisky.
