Thursday, July 2, 1863, The Second Day, Chapter 5, Longstreet Summary
Longstreet goes to the hospital to visit Hood where he is having his injured hand and arm treated. Hood sees Longstreet and tells him they should have gone right. Longstreet lies to Hood and tells him there were few casualties and that they took the rocks, Devil's Den. Longstreet leaves, inspecting the battlefield. Barksdale is dead, Semmes too. Longstreet sends Goree out to scout the right flank, hoping to avoid another countermarch in the morning. Goree tells Longstreet that Hood's officers blame Longstreet for their loss that day. They cannot blame Lee so they blame Longstreet. Sorrel comes and tells Longstreet that the casualty numbers are high, highest in Hood's division. Sorrel believes that Hood suffered more than fifty percent losses. Longstreet sends him to get a more exact figure. Another...
