Summary
The novel opens from the perspective of 16-year-old Bruno Victor Benucci, also known as Vic, as Sergeant Mendes interrogates him. This is happening at the Hackensack Police Station in New Jersey. We learn that Vic has been missing for eight days and that he and a girl named Madeline Falco came to the police station earlier with the primary suspect in a murder investigation. Vic tells her that his friend, Baz, is no murderer. Mendes says that his DNA was found on the murder weapon. Vic begins his story. We flashback to eight days earlier.
