Chapters Three, Four and Five Summary
By September 20, Faith has started second grade but has missed days for a battery of tests to rule out medical problems associated with her visions. She begins taking Risperdal, but it will eventually prove ineffective and be discontinued. Mariah continues to hope the medication will work but then Faith says that "my guard says everyone has things to teach people," proving that she's still having the visions. Mariah, in an effort to reach Faith, tells her about her (Mariah's) suicide attempt and the resulting confinement. Faith is afraid and accuses Mariah of believing she's made up her "guard." Then Faith tells Mariah that her "guard" knows about Priscilla and that she is forgiven. Mariah will later relate the story to her mother, that she had a kitten named Priscilla, that she dressed in her clothes...
