Summary
The Major arrives and says that he cannot stay long. He says that he has met with Henriette’s parents and that he plans to help all three of the Helds leave Budapest and stay hidden with friends of his in the countryside. Unfortunately, the Major is unable to help all three Helds escape at the same time. Henriette remains on Katalin Street, staying hidden with the Birós and Elekeses, as the Nazis have apparently demanded Jewish prisoners as part of Hungary’s surrender to them. The characters soon learn that Mr. and Mrs. Held have been arrested by the Nazis. It soon becomes apparent that the Helds will likely be killed. Mrs. Temes and the Major work out a series of signals in the event of any strangers’ arrival at the house; the signals tell Henriette where to run and hide in...
