Summary
The rainy season has begun in Kanthapura, and the people pray to the goddess Kenchamma for a fine harvest and no sickness. The narrator also assures the reader that “they say he’ll come, Moorthy, when the winds will have risen” (113). Everyone is preparing not only for the harvest, but also for Moorthy’s release. News comes that Moorthy has been released and when Venkamma hears this, she decides to change the date of her daughter's wedding so the people must choose “between a Brahmanic feast and a feast for a polluted pig” (114). While the people wait excitedly for Moorthy, they see a group of policemen around Rangamma’s house and realize that Moorthy is there. At this, the people cry out “Mahatma Gandhi ki jai!”, and Rangamma comes out and commands them to disperse in the name of Moorthy (116).
