Summary
Chapter 10 opens with a description of the beauty of Kanthapura in Kartik, “a month of the gods” (81). Despite this beauty, there is trouble: Moorthy is being arrested. Bade Khan commands the police officer to bind Moorthy. Rachanna cries out “Mahatma Gandhi ki jai!” and the policemen rush forward to attack him and the others that have gathered (83). The officers beat the people and Moorthy commands, “Brothers, in the name of the Mahatma, let there be peace and love and order” (84). As Moorthy is dragged down the steps, people from the Brahmin quarter come forth and announce, “We too are Gandhi’s men, beat us as much as you like” (85). Although the people go back to Kanthapura, Moorthy is taken away to Karwar. Receiving word that Moorthy had been taken, lawyers come to his defense and students raise funds to afford them.
