Summary
In Chapter 19, Hans and Katharina stay at an apartment Hans inherited from a friend (111). After finding Katharina’s letters, Ingrid threw Hans out. Katharina likes that “they’re in constant proximity” (112). Hans is glad to be with her, but unsure about their future.
Since Ingrid kicked him out, Hans “hasn’t felt inclined to write” (113). He wonders if he will move “back in with her” (114). He recalls the affair his mother had while his father was at war. He guesses returning to Ingrid will mean losing Katharina. He questions the definitions of marriage and love.
