Summary
The novel begins with an author's note explaining the origin of the story and the translations available for the original Ramayana. Since the author focuses on Keikeyi, some events are unique to this novel. There is also a list of major characters.
Part One: Chapter One begins in Kaikeyi's point-of-view, saying her birth under a holy constellation did little for her. She was meant for great things, but her father only cared for her twin, Yudhajit, who came second. Kaikeyi's mother had six more sons, a symbol of prosperity for the Kekaya Kingdom. People blamed Kaikeyi's father for her mistakes, but she believes he loved his sons fiercely and ignored her.
She recalls playing hide-and-seek with her brothers when she and Yudhajit were called to their father's throne. Raja Ashwapati says their mother, Kekaya, is gone and Kaikeyi will take duties...
