Summary

In Part 6, Chapter 1, it is March through May of 1978. Eva comes home from the hospital, still sick but getting by. Andras seeks Eva and Maja’s advice regarding Nina’s forcing Renee to play in a piano recital. Eva tells Andras that she and Majas raised him like a son because of the war, but now, Andras does not need mothers. Instead, Andras needs a wife. Eva feels as if time is short, and wants Andras to promise her he will be happy. Nina, meanwhile, goes above and beyond in trying to help care for Eva. Andras prays that he will become more like Eva, in the hopes that Eva will live.

Cecil and Beatrix host a shalom bat for their newborn daughter. Cecil uses the opportunity to explain that Beatrix has been offered a wonderful job in Oxford, Somerville. It will...
