Summary
In Chapter 20, “whitening” (307), Rankine discusses the popularity of skin whitening agents in many Asian countries and the media depictions of Japanese tennis phenom Naomi Osaka. Osaka's father is Haitian, and her Japanese grandparents shunned the family for many years because of his ethnicity. In Japanese media, images of Osaka often depict her with lighter skin because of antiblack racism. Rankine believes this racism is imported from Western countries.
Images from this chapter include stills from a video for a skin whitening product, pictures of Naomi Osaka, and stills from a racist Chinese commercial for laundry detergent.
In Chapter 21, “liminal spaces iii” (317), Rankine considers the limited views about black people held by the majority of white people, which are often based in stereotype. She wonders how things might change in the future and mentions author Ta-Nehisi Coates' commentary on racial reparations...
