Betraying Trust
The novel examines the issue of betraying trust as Lily, Jake, and Nina’s mother demonstrate that some individuals are not worthy of the trust bestowed upon them. Lily betrays both Christopher’s and Nina’s trust. Jake betrays Nina’s trust when he has an affair with Lily. Nina’s mother betrays Nina’s trust when she murders Jake.
Lily is the character guilty of the most betrayal because she betrays both Christopher and Nina. Lily lies to Christopher and claims she was the victim of an unprovoked attack by Jake. In reality, Lily angered Jake when she told him that she no longer wanted to continue their affair. Lily also betrayed her friendship with Nina.
