Nina Hayes

Nina Hayes is one of the two first-person narrators in the novel. Nina is Jake’s wife. She believes Lily is her best friend. Once Nina learns that her husband has been killed, that he has not just left her, Nina decides that Lily was having an affair with him and is responsible for his death.

Nina is shocked when she learns that while Lily had an affair with Jake and she did have an altercation with him in the woods, she did not kill him. Nina’s mother killed Jake believing she was doing Nina a favor. Nina suspected her mother only after she found her mother, who claimed she could not see well enough to drive because she had macular degeneration, had gotten a speeding ticket on her way to Langley Park on the day that Jake was killed.
