Summary

In the Prologue, the unnamed narrator, assumed to be Lily, runs from a threat in the woods. She thinks that she is about to be killed. She had not anticipated things happening the way they did.

In “Christian,” Christian notices that his pregnant wife, Lily, seems distracted and upset. He believes she is just tired because of her pregnancy. Before they go to bed, however, she reminds him to lock the doors and asks him to set the alarm, which they generally never set.

In “Nina,” Nina falls asleep with the television on waiting for her husband, Jake, to come home. They had an argument the night before, and Nina wants to talk about things before they go to bed. They had fought after she made a comment about a patient who died. Jake, a neurosurgeon, had known she would die before...
