Summary
Lucy calls Mrs Campbell, Joseph’s mother, in Chapter 16. They make plans to meet, without Joseph. They settle on Mrs Campbell’s house as a suitable location. Lucy finds herself feeling very nervous beforehand. She wonders whether Mrs Campbell will judge her harshly. When they meet at last, Mrs Campbell is reserved and cold. Lucy feels like she is at a job interview. Joseph takes Lucy out to meet his coworkers from the leisure center. She gets along perfectly with everyone. Joseph’s friends love her, especially the women. At the nightclub, Lucy dances. Joseph fears being the subject of ridicule but everyone in the club seems to enjoy and admire Lucy’s dancing.
