Summary
Joseph and Lucy go to the Shakespeare play in Chapter 13. It is a tacky production, where the actors interact with the audience before the show even begins. This makes the pair feel uneasy. Joseph observes that there are only two other black people in the entire audience. Joseph did his best to research the play beforehand but has trouble following it. He is extremely nervous for the conversation him and Lucy will have after the play, where he will have to pretend to have understood and appreciated the play. During intermission, Joseph bonds with the man ahead of him over their mutual plight. Lucy, in the meantime, goes to the bathroom. She finds herself wondering who in the audience voted in favor of Brexit. She realizes that Joseph makes her think more about politics and inequality.
