Section 13: Chapters 21 & 22 Summary
In Chapter 21, Juniper can feel that they are being watched as they wait in the courtyard, and when a servant tries to lead Juniper to Meroot, Juniper refuses to go without Finbar. When she confronts Meroot, Meroot objects to Finbar's presence but quickly yields as she explains that Gamal cannot see Juniper because he is unwell. Juniper offers to help since she is trained in healing, but Meroot contemptuously declines though there is "no doubt that you know all the old wives have to teach" (page 160). Meroot indicates that Finbar will have a room in the barracks, but Juniper insists that he will stay near her since he is her bodyguard, feigning disapproving shock when Meroot suggests that such an arrangement would cause gossip.
