Summary
It is past two in the morning and, in the gymnasium, slowly emptying, Spook Spinelli and Marv Bertel linger, drunk and dancing. The very married Marv, hoping he may be stumbling his way toward a fantasy he has nursed about Spook since college, cannot help but notice even as Spook strokes his rear end that she sports two wedding bands. She happily acknowledges she is currently married to two men. “Fell in love. Got married. Fell in love with number two, forgot to fall out of love with number one,” she explains casually (83). Both men, she tells Marv, know and accept the arrangement. As the night hisses into early dawn, Spook graciously declines Marv’s sloppy, if sincere offer for “late-night nookie” (85) in favor of a night with Billy McMann.
