Summary
In Chapter 9, Juliet, Harlowe and Maxine go to an Octavia Butler writer's workshop together. When they arrive, a woman named Zaira greets Maxine fondly, and is introduced to Juliet. Juliet notices that the workshop is clearly directed towards people of color; however, there are a number of white allies, including Harlowe, in attendance as well. As Zaira opens the workshop, she says, "White allies, we ask that you respect this space, own your privileges, and remain open to your own journey" (107). The participants in the workshop introduce themselves to their neighbors, and Juliet meets a woman, Melonie, breastfeeding her son. They all brainstorm words they relate to science fiction, and then are asked to choose one of these words and phrases and write about it.
