Point of View
The novel is written in third-person from the limited perspective of Julie, an Eskimo girl living in Alaska. Julie is 14 years-old and has had several significant life experiences by this point, including being forced into an arranged marriage at age 13. She ran away from that marriage and was lost on the tundra for a time, where she survived only with the help of a wolf pack. Despite the difficulties, she remains kind and optimistic, and these traits are clearly seen in Julie's perspective. Additionally, Julie is mature, intelligent, and devoted to the Eskimo culture which clearly comes across in her perspective. Through Julie's eyes, the reader learns about the region of Alaska where Julie lives with her father and about nature. Specifically, Julie teaches the reader about the behavior of wolves and how Julie has adapted to be more like them.
