Summary
Julie has settled into her life and she does not hear the wolves from February until early April. One day, Peter arrives and is clearly disappointed that Kapugen is in Fairbanks. Peter and Malek have an opportunity to join a whaling crew but need someone to watch out for the musk ox herd. Julie says she will do it. After he leaves, Julie wonders why she allowed him to call her Miyax rather than Julie. Ellen closes school in mid-April as families settle into routines of hunting various game, including ducks. One day, a man named Harry Ulugaq arrives with a basket made of whalebone for Kapugen to sell during one of his trips to Fairbanks.
