Intolerance for the black race
Vyrie is, from a young age, very conscious of the fact that she's considered black and is a slave, despite the fact that her skin is white and she's the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner. She knows how to survive in her situation but hates the prejudice that is part of her everyday life. After she is granted her freedom, she sets out to make a life of her own and it's soon evident that her family, as blacks, will face continued discrimination. She hates the intolerance, especially on the part of whites who are angry at the blacks. Because of her white skin, many whites talk to her freely about their prejudice without realizing that she considers herself black. When Vyrie is called on one day to help a young woman in labor, she pitches in and successfully delivers the baby. Later...
