Chapters 50 through 58 Summary
In Chapter Fifty, Innis and Vyry are taken to a house in Luverne, Alabama, by the soldiers. They discover that many of the people are hungry because of a recent famine in the area. The soldiers say that many whites died of starvation during the war, a fact that Vyry and Innis say they'd never heard before. Three weeks later, Vyry loses the baby she's carrying. Innis tries desperately to restore Vyry to her former sense of happiness but to no avail. They learn that there's a farm near Greensville that is available for homesteading and Innis is excited but Vyry is apprehensive. She says that she doesn't want to go there if they aren't wanted.
