Chapter 9 Summary and Analysis
In the summer of 1969, two years after her accident, Joni takes inventory of her spiritual life and finds it mainly lacking. She still questions why God allowed such a horrible turn in her life. Her devoted friend, Diana, is always nearby to support Joni and help in her journey to God. Diana announces that she is having a friend stop by. His name is Steve Estes, a sixteen-year-old who is spiritually gifted and mature beyond his years. At first Joni is put off by his youth, but she is willing to meet with him. Soon after meeting Steve, she marvels at how dynamic and knowledgeable the young man is. Steve shows not a hint of awkwardness about Joni's physical disability. It's as if he doesn't even notice.
