Summary
Joan travels to Greenwich without telling anyone. Fang lives in a six-bedroom mansion with his wife Tami, their children, and countless servants. Joan finds her mother looking thinner. They have tea together. Joan asks her not to tell anyone she came. Joan leaves shortly after. She thinks about death during the cab ride to the station.
Joan receives a gift basket with an invitation to Fang and Tami’s annual Harvest Bash. That same day, Fang texts her and tells her to bring a friend.
Joan overhears a man and a woman talking about Mark in the elevator. They say he gives good recommendations. Joan recalls how he recommended John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath to her. Mark has lots of opinions on everything: books, television, and New York City.
Reese asks Joan to take his shift on Thanksgiving. Joan accepts. Her family...
