Summary
Nefer, Alcira, and Mamá wait for a bus that will take them into the town center. Mamá is embarrassed to take Nefer out in public and be associated with her, despite the fact that still no one knows about Nefer's pregnancy. Nefer thinks about how silly it is that she and her family are going to visit a doctor, it has been three months of vomiting and feeling horrible, and Nefer is confident that she knows what is happening to herself. For a moment, she wonders if telling the doctor she is pregnant is the same as telling the priest, and perhaps her sin will be absolved - but ultimately decides that it is not, and that it was a ridiculous thought. On the bus, Mamá talks to some of the other bus passengers, including a woman who keeps complimenting Alcira on how beautiful...
