Summary
Nefer wakes up the next morning in the room she shares with her sister, Alcira, alone. She is determined to go to the Mission. Nefer's mother calls her into her bedroom, and Nefer enters. Mamá begins slapping Nefer across the face and shouting at her for sneaking out the prior day during siesta. Mamá asks Nefer why she went, and Nefer informs her that she had to tell the relatives and the Borges about the Mission. Mamá is still livid, this does not calm her down. Finally, Papá rescues Nefer by sending her outside to milk the cows.
In the barn, Nefer milks the cows and tries not to cry. As she tries tying one of the cows to the milking post, it accidentally kicks over one of the nearly-full buckets of milk. Watching the spilled milk sink into the ground, Nefer collapses and...
