Death

Jane has just lost her daughter, Melody, to a drug overdose. She feels guilty that she is still alive, while her daughter is dead. Jane goes to support meetings to help her deal with her daughter’s addiction and death.

Jane also loses Grace, who was her best friend and sponsor at Alcoholics Anonymous. Grace dies slowly from a brain tumor. Jane is able to spend time with her friend and say a proper goodbye. Melody’s death is difficult because she watched her daughter slowly kill herself with her drug and alcohol abuse. Jane tried to help her by paying for treatments and offering a place to stay, but her daughter chose the drugs over her relationship with her mother. Jane had no contact with her daughter the last year of her life and feels that she did not know her at all.
