Summary
In Chapter 27, Jane digs up the rose bush that her mother gave her when she moved into the house. She looks back at her house one more time before getting into her car. As she drives away, she honks twice as if to say goodbye, but she does not know to whom or why. On the ferry, she gets coffee and stands on the deck watching the island recede into the sky. It had been her home for twenty years.
Jane goes to her mother’s house in Olympia. She takes the rosebush from her car and hauls it to the front door. There is no answer. She is walking back to her car when a Cadillac pulls up and her mother gets out wearing her church hat. She is surprised to see Jane. She tells her mother that she sold her house...
